Cetirizine is an H1-histamine receptor blocker which affects the primary stage of an allergic reaction by decreasing the migration of eosinophils as well as the later stages of an allergic reactions by inhibiting the release of allergic mediators. The drug does not exert anticholinergic and antiserotonin effect. In therapeutic doses does not exert sedative effects.

Which conditions are treated with Cetirizine?

The drug is indicated in treatment of:

• Hay fever
• Allergic rhinitis
• Allergic conjunctivitis
• Dermatitis
• Hives
• Quincke's edema

What should a patient know before using Zyrtec?

The Cetirizine should not be used in cases of:

• Severe liver disease
• Young age prior to 6 years
• Pregnancy
• Breastfeeding period
• Hypersensitivity to any components of the preparation

The preparation should be used with caution in:

• Chronic pyelonephritis
• Elderly patients

Which adverse effects may manifest when using the medication?

The side effects of Zyrtec include:

• Gastrointestinal tract: dry mouth, dyspepsia.
• CNS: headache, somnolence, fatigability, dizziness, irritability, migraines
• Allergic reactions
