How does Biaxin work and what pharmaceutical group does it belong to?

Clarithromycin is a semi-synthetic antibiotic which belongs t a group of macrolides. The drug works by inhibiting the protein synthesis in a bacterial cells by interacting with 50S ribosome subunit. The drug mainly exert bacteriostatic as well as bactericidal effect in increased concentration. The preparation affects a broad-spectrum of bacteria including gram-positive and negative strains.

Which conditions are treated with Clarithromycin?

The preparation is used in treatment of infections caused by susceptible bacteria such as:

• Infections of the respiratory tract
• Skin and soft tissue infections
• Middle otitis
• Stomach and duodenal ulcer (Helicobacter pylori - eradication)
• Mycobacteriosis

What should a patient know before using Biaxin?

The Clarithromycin should not be used in cases of:

• Hypersensitivity to any components of the preparations
• Porphyry

The preparation should be used with caution in:

• Liver or renal failure
• Young children
• Pregnancy
• Lactation period

Which adverse effects may manifest when using the medication?

The side effects of Biaxin include:

• CNS and sensory organs: headache, dizziness, anxiety, fear, insomnia, nightmares, ear ringing, change of taste, disorientation, hallucinations, psychosis, depersonalization, confusion, paresthesia
• Gastrointestinal tract: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomatitis, glossitis, jaundice
• Cardiovascular and haemopoietic system: thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, arrhythmia
• Urogenital system: Interstitial nephritis, renal failure
• Allergic reactions: skin rash, itching, anaphylactic reactions, hives
• Other: development of resistant microorganisms, hypoglycemia
