How does Bicillin work and what pharmaceutical group does it belong to?

Bicilin 3 is a combined antibacterial preparation of 3 Benzylpenicillin salts, which exert a long term effect. The preparation exerts bactericidal effect through inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cellular membrane. The drug is effective against gram positive and negative microorganisms.

Bicilin 5 an antibiotic with expressed prolonged effect, the drug contains 2 salts of Benzylpenicillin. The drug works by affecting the synthesis of peptidoglicane, thus affecting the synthesis of bacterial cellular membrane, suppressing the growth and bacterial cell multiplication.

Which conditions are treated with Bicillin?

The preparations are used in treatment of the following disorders:

Bicillin 3 Infections which are caused by susceptible microorganisms syphilis, streptococcal infections including acute tonsillitis, scarlet fever, wound infections, erysipelas, rheumatism

Bicillin 5 Infections which are caused by susceptible infections, especially in cases of prolonged treatment. All year round prophylaxis of rheumatism in adults and children.

What should a patient know before using Bicillin?

The Bicillin should not be used in cases of:

Hypersensitivity to any components of the drug or to other penicillins.

The drug should be used with caution in:

• Bronchial asthma
• Hay fever
• Other allergic disorders

Which adverse effects may manifest when using the medication?

The side effects of Bicillin include:

• Allergic reactions
• Arthralgia
• Fever
• Exfoliative dermatitis
• Stomatitis
• Glossitis
• Anemia
• Thrombocytopenia
• Leukopenia
• Hypo-coagulation
• Headache
• Hives
• Angioneurotic edema
• Anaphylactic shock
• Possible super-infection with resistant microorganisms or fungi.
