How does Keflex work and what pharmaceutical group does it belong to?

Keflex belongs to the group of drugs called antibiotics. The preparation exerts bactericidal effect, disturbs cell wall synthesis of microorganisms. Cefalexin is resistant to penicillinase gram positive microorganisms and is breaking by beta-lactamase gram-negative microorganisms.

Which conditions are treated with Keflex?

Keflex treats infections of the following systems:

  • Upper and lower respiratory tract
  • Urinary system
  • ENT organs

What should a patient know before using Keflex?

The Keflex should not be used in cases of:

  • Hypersensitivity to any components of the drug or to other cephalosporines

Cefalexin should be used with caution in:

  • Renal insufficiency
  • Pseudomembranous colitis
  • Pregnancy
  • Breastfeeding
  • Infancy

Which adverse effects may manifest when using the medication?

The side effects of Keflex include:

  • Allergic reactions: urticaria, angioedema, Stevens Johnson's syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, anaphylaxis, arthralgia, arthritis, eosinophilia, genital and perianal itch.
  • In nervous system: dizziness, weakness, excitement, hallucinations, convulsions.
  • In urogenital system: vaginitis, vaginal discharge, genital candidosis, interstitial nephritis.
  • In digestive system: stomach pain, xerostomia, decrease of appetite, nausea, vomit, dyspepsia, diarrhea, toxic hepatitis, cholestatic jaundice, bowel candidosis.
  • In blood-forming organ: neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia.
