How does Vermox work and what pharmaceutical group does it belong to?

Vermox is anti-helminthic preparation with a broad spectrum action. It is highly effective against enterobiasis and trichocephaliasis. Action mechanism is associated with inhibiting of glucose utilization, depletion of glycogen in helminths tissue and preventing cellular tubulin synthesis Mebendazole also retards synthesis of ATP in helminths cells.

What should a patient know before using Vermox?

The Vermox should not be used in cases of:

  • Hypersensitivity to any of the medication ingredient
  • Non-specific ulcerous colitis
  • Crohn's disease
  • Liver failure
  • Children (under 2 years of age)
  • Pregnancy
  • Breastfeeding

In long-term treatment it is necessary to monitor blood picture, liver and kidney function. Do not drink alcohol or take fatty food with mebendazole.

Which adverse effects may manifest when using the medication?

The side effects of Vermox include:

  • Drowsiness
  • Nausea
  • Stomach pain

High doses and long-term use may cause: vomiting, diarrhea, headache, allergic reactions (skin rash, hives, angioedema), increased activity of liver transaminases, leukopenia, anemia, hair loss, hematuria, cylindruria, hypercreatininemia.

The drug is affected by the following:

  • Insulin
  • Lipophilic substances
  • H2 histamine receptor blockers (cimetidine)
  • Anticonvulsants (carbamazepine)
