Thus, this study demonstrated comparable effectiveness of azithromycin and doxycycline in the treatment of rosacea, and a favorable safety profile.
Rosacea is a common inflammatory skin disease. The current use of systemic antibacterial drugs in the treatment of rosacea is usually accompanied by adverse drug reactions. In this regard, there is a need for the effective drugs, characterized by a small number of adverse drug reactions and good effectivenss. The recent study demonstrated the effectiveness of the antibiotic azithromycin in the treatment of inflammatory acne.
The purpose of the randomized, open clinical study was to compare the effectiveness of azithromycin with conventional therapy with doxycycline in the treatment of rosacea.
Patients were divided into 2 groups. Patients of group 1 received azithromycin 500 mg 3 times a week (Monday, Wednesday and Saturday) during the first month, 250 mg 3 times a week (Monday, Wednesday and Saturday) during the second month and 250 mg 2 times a week (Tuesday and Saturday) in the third month. The second group of patients receiving 100 mg of doxycycline daily for three months.
Clinical evaluation was carried out at baseline, at the end of the first, second and third months of treatment and 2 months after treatment. A limitation of this study was an open design.
As it turned out, in both treatment groups, there was a statistically significant improvement during therapy. The effectiveness of doxycycline and azithromycin were similar. In 4 patients treated with azithromycin, there was diarrhea, whereas 2 patients treated with doxycycline had a heartburn.
Thus, this study demonstrated comparable effectiveness of azithromycin and doxycycline in the treatment of rosacea, and a favorable safety profile.
