Cefazolin is a cephalosporin antibiotic which possesses such qualities.
Cefazolin's good tolerance and excellent effects against gram-positive bacteria make it a good solution not just for skin infections or systemic infections, but also as a perioperative agent. Depending on the type of surgery, antibiotics are needed to reduce the risks of possible infections following the intervention. Cefazolin is a cephalosporin antibiotic which possesses such qualities.
Preoperative incursion
Cefazolin is used during preoperative incursions only if a bacterial infection is already present, thus changing the purpose of the drug from a prophylaxis-driven antibiotic, to a curative drug. Should there be any signs indicating an infection, specimens will be collected to determine which antibiotic is needed. If Cefazolin qualifies, the patient may be administered the substance and this treatment is likely to continue for the entire perioperative period.
Intraoperative incidence
Cefazolin is given during surgeries only if the risk of a future infection is obvious. It is mainly the case of surgeries involving organs whose possible infections would prove devastating to the body (such as prosthetic arthroplasties, open-heart surgeries, etc.). It is also a good solution for potentially contaminated surgeries.
Postoperative treatment
Doctors administer the drug after surgeries to reduce the risks of both possible internal bacterial infections which may have been triggered during the procedure or skin infections during the healing of the place of the incision. Cefazolin is particularly effective in this case because its moderated spectrum fights many possibly threatening bacteria. However, if there's no time pressure, tests should be run and bacterial epidemiology strictly determined before administering the drug.
In any of the cases above, medical professionals should pay great attention to how the system reacts to this dose of antibiotic. Cefazolin's excretion is renal; if the patient has problems with his or her renal function, caution should be exercised.
