Augmentin is the brand name of amoxicillin / clavulanic acid produced by GlaxoSmithKline. Augmentin Duo and Augmentin Duo Forte are two subclasses of the product that refer to pills with stronger doses of amoxicillin.

There are a few precautions you need to take before and during a treatment with these drugs. Some of these precautions refer to the whole spectrum of antibiotics (general precautions) whereas others are strictly related to the fact that you're dealing with a strong antibiotic (specific precautions).

General precautions

• Make sure it is well absorbed in the system. To do this, take it before a meal with a glass of water.
• Keep a strict schedule, and fully respect the amount of time between doses. Bacteria have specific life cycles and you need to trick that by taking the antibiotic at regular intervals.

Special precautions

• Augmentin Duo and Duo Forte require special attention on your part. You should monitor everything, from the condition of your stomach to your urine. If you notice pain, if your urine doesn't have the right color, or if you feel itchy, call your physician. These may be signs that the dose is too strong for your system.
• Tell your doctor if you take medicines for treating gout. Such medication interacts with this antibiotic.
• Don't assume that you need fewer doses just because the drug you're taking is stronger. From a pharmaceutical point of view, there's no real correlation between the duration of the treatment and the strength of doses when dealing with antibiotics. Augmentin Duo doesn't make an exception to this rule.
• Ask your doctor how to handle a missed dose. As a general rule, you must simply skip it and take the next dose when it's due. If, on the other side, you take it, you may risk an overdose and the side effects of antibiotics overdoses are serious and can affect you for the weeks to follow.
