How does generic Serevent work and what pharmaceutical group does it belong to?

Generic Serevent contains the active ingredient Salmeterol. Salmeterol is a bronchodilating remedy, selective beta2-adrenergic receptor agonist with the long-term effect. After inhalation, salmeterol relaxes smooth muscles of the bronchi, decreases their reactivity. Th medication also inhibits the release of histamine, leukotriens and prostaglandin D2 by the mast cells. Bronchodilating action of salmeterol is observed usually in 5-10 minutes after inhalation.

Which conditions are treated with generic Serevent?

Salmeterol inhaler is used to treat:

• Bronchial asthma including prophylaxis of bronchospasm caused by physical load
• Chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases including chronic obstructive bronchitis and pulmonary emphysema

What should a patient know before using generic Serevent?

The medication is contraindicated for use in the following conditions:

• Hypersensitivity to any of the drug ingredients
• Children age
• Pregnancy (category C) and breastfeeding

Make sure to let your doctor know if any of the following conditions apply to you:

• Hypertension
• Arrhythmia
• Increased heart rate
• Congestive heart failure
• Hyperthyroidism
• Diabetes
• Epilepsy
• Seizures

Which adverse effects may manifest when using the medication?

The side effects of Serevent generic include:

• Cardiovascular system: possible headache, palpitation, cardiac arrhythmia
• Digestive system: taste changes, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, irritation of the mucous membranes of the mouth or throat.
• Allergic reactions: urticaria, angioedema, bronchospasm.
• Other: tremor, muscle cramps, arthralgia, hypokalemia, nervousness.
  Serevent may cause paradoxical bronchospasm, which must be immediately treated rapid inhalation of bronchodilator.

Which groups of drugs or specific preparations may interact with Serevent generic?

The drug is affected by the following:

• Beta-blockers
• Certain antibiotics (isoniazid, clarithromycin, erythromycin)
• Certain anti-fungals (itraconazole, ketoconazole, miconazole)
• Certain diuretics
• MAO inhibitors
• Cardiac glycosides (digoxin)
• Long-acting beta receptors agonists such as fluticasone and salmeterol, formoterol and arfomoterol
• Tricyclic antidepressants

Tell your doctor about all the herbal preparations as well as prescription drugs that you are currently taking even if they are not on the list.
