How does Alesse work and what pharmaceutical group does it belong to?

Alesse is a combined monophasic oral contraceptive. The preparations effect is based on different effects among which are: the inhibition of ovulation and change in the viscosity of the cervical mucous. During the use of the preparation the menstrual cycle becomes more regular and the risk of ferrous deficient anemia development is decreased.

Which conditions are treated with Alesse?

The preparation is normally prescribed to prevent unwanted pregnancy. The drug maybe use din treatment of other conditions if prescribed by your health care provider.

What should a patient know before using Alesse?

The Alesse should not be used in cases of:

• Known thrombosis and other vessel disorders
• Conditions that increase the possibility of thrombosis development
• Diabetes
• Severe liver disease
• Liver tumors
• Hormone dependent tumors
• Vaginal bleeding of unknown origin
• Pregnancy or lactation period
• Hypersensitivity to any components of the preparation

Which adverse effects may manifest when using the medication?

The side effects of Alesse include:

• Gastrointestinal tract: nausea, vomiting
• Genital system: changes in vaginal secretion
• Endocrine system: tenderness of the mammary glands, increase in breast size, weight change, libido changes
• CNS: mood changes, headache, migraines
• Other: irritation from contact lenses, fluid retention, allergic reactions

Which groups of drugs or specific preparations may interact with Alesse?

The drug is affected by the following:

• Epilepsy treatment
• Barbiturates
• Tuberculosis treatment
• Antibiotics especially, penicillins and tetracyclines
