Epilepsy is a one of the most widespread disease of the central nervous system, which due to its expression is a serious medical and social problem. Epilepsy is a cerebral disease, which is characterized by locomotor, sensory, vegetative and intellectual function. Although in between the episodes the patient may be completely adequate and cannot be distinguished from a healthy individual. It is important to note that an individual episode is not considered to be epilepsy. And only the recurring episodes are enough to diagnose a patient with epilepsy. In epilepsy the episodes are spontaneous and may not be provoked by any external factor, they express themselves without warning. Episodes that may occur in patients with increased body temperature(febrile seizures), fright are not connected with epilepsy.

The reasons for the seizure appearance are connected to age of the patient. In children the main factor of epilepsy appearance is oxygen insufficiency during pregnancy(hypoxia), natal disorders of the cerebrum, intra-womb infections, rarely - delivery trauma. Other forms of epilepsy include inherited predisposition. In these types of epilepsy the risk of a baby born with the illness if one of the patients suffers form epilepsy is only 8%.

Epilepsy treatment includes the following groups of preparations:

• Valproates (valproic acid)
• Carboxamides
• GABA analogues (Neurontin)
• Sulfonamides
• Triazines

All of the above mentioned preparations are firstly taken in small dosages which are gradually increased with the passage of time. If the treatment is proven to be not as effective as it should be then the doctor might change the therapy.
