How does Zocor work and what pharmaceutical group does it belong to?

Zocor is a hypolipidemic drug obtained from fermentation product named Aspergillus terreus. The drug reduces high an normal cholesterol level in the blood also decreases low density lipoproteins concentration in the blood . Simvastatin increases the amount of low density lipoproteins concentration and reduces triglyceride blood levels. Zocor is excreted in the form of metabolites from the organism along with bile and urine.

Which conditions are treated with Zocor?

Zocor is indicated in the following conditions:

• Primary hypercholesterolemia of IIa and IIb type
• Combined hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia
• Hyperlipoproteinemia
• Prophylaxis of heart attacks, stroke and cerebrovascular diseases

What should a patient know before using Zocor?

The Zocor should not be used if any of the following conditions apply to you:

• Hypersensitivity to any of the medication ingredients
• Liver dysfunction
• Acute liver disorders
• Pregnancy
• Breastfeeding
• Children and adolescents younger than 18 years of age

Which adverse effects may manifest when using the medication?

The side effects of Zocor include:

• Digestive system: dyspepsia, hepatitis, jaundice, acute pancreatitis
• Nervous system and sensory organs: asthenia, dizziness, headache, sleep disorder, convulsions, paresthesia, peripheral neuropathy, taste disorder.
• Locomotor system: miopathy, myalgia, myasthenia;
• Allergic reactions: angioneurotic edema, rheumatic polimyalgiya, vasculitis, thrombocytopenia, eosinophilia, arthritis, arthralgia, urticaria, photosensibilization, fever,shortness of breath.
• Dermatological reactions: skin rash, itch, alopecia.
• Other: anemia, heartbeat, acute renal insufficiency.
