How does Irbesartan work and what pharmaceutical group does it belong to?

The drug belongs to a class of angiotensin receptor antagonists. It works by blocking angiotensin-I receptors thus decreasing the effects of angiotensin II including vessel constriction, aldosterone release and sympathetic system activation, thus causing a decrease in arterial pressure. The drug decreases peripheral resistance, decreases afterload. The drug does not affect the concentration of triglycerides, cholesterol concentration, glucose, urea in the plasm.

The drug is indicated in treatment and prophylaxis of arterial hypertension.

What should a patient know before using Irbesartan?

The Irbesartan should not be used in cases of:

• Pregnancy
• Young age
• Hypersensitivity to any components of the preparation
• Breastfeeding

The drug should be used with caution in:

• Patients with impaired renal function

Which adverse effects may manifest when using the medication?

The side effects of Irbesartan include:

• CNS: headache, dizziness, fainting
