How does Microzide work and what pharmaceutical group does it belong to?

Microzide belongs to a group of preparations called diuretics. It reduces Na+ absorption, increases K+, hydrogen carbonates and phosphates excretion with the urine. The medication does not act on acid-base balance, increases Mg2+ excretion from the organism and maintains the constant level of Ca2+ ions in the organism. The drug decreases high blood pressure via lowering a blood volume(diuretic effect).

Which conditions are treated with Microzide?

Hydrochlorothiazide is indicated for the treatment of the following conditions:

• Hypertension
• Diabetes insipidus
• Subcompensated glaucoma
• Profilaxis of stones formation in the urinary tract

What should a patient know before using Microzide?

The Microzide should not be used in cases of:

• Hypersensitivity
• Gout
• Diabetes mellitus
• Kidney failure
• Liver failure
• Children under 5 years of age
• Anuria
• Addison disease
• Low potassium blood levels
• High calcium blood level
• Low sodium blood levels
• Pregnancy (I trimester)
• Breastfeeding
• The medication should be used with caution in pregnancy (II - III trimester)

Which adverse effects may manifest when using the medication?

The side effects of Microzide include:

• Xerostomia
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Dizziness
• Headache
• Cramp in legs
• Low potassium blood level
• Low sodium blood level
• Hyperuricemia
• High calcium blood level
• Thrombosis
• Thrombembolia
• Hypercreatininemia
• Vasculitis

The drug is affected by the following:

• Indirect anticoagulant
• Hypolipidemics
• NSAID's
• Vasodilating agents
• Beta-blockers
• Barbiturates
• Phenothiazines
• Tricyclic antidepressants
• Salicylates
• Cardiac glycosides
• Contraceptives

Tell your doctor about all the herbal preparations as well as prescription drugs that you are currently taking even if they are not on the list.
