How does Propranolol work and what pharmaceutical group does it belong to?

Propranolol belongs to the groups of medications called beta-blockers. By blocking beta receptors Propranolol prevents the effects of catecholamines. Catecholamines cause blood vessels to narrow increasing blood pressure. Propranolol lowers heart rate, possesses a negative chronotropic and inotropic effect. The medication also exerts moderate bronchodilating action.

Which conditions are treated with Propranolol?

Propranolol is used to treat: hypertension, stenocardia, unstable angina, sinus tachycardia, supraventricular tachycardia, essential tremor, anxiety, migraine, pheochromocytoma, Basedow's goiter.

What should a patient know before using Propranolol?

The Propranolol should not be used in cases of:

• Hypersensitivity
• Congestive heart failure
• Cardiogenic shock
• Atrioventricular heart block of II-III stage
• Sick sinus syndrome
• Sinus bradycardia
• Prinzmetal's angina
• Cardiomegaly
• Hypotension
• Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease
• Bronchial allergy
• Metabolic acidosis
• Breastfeeding

The drug should be used with caution in:

• Allergic reactions
• Metabolic acidosis
• Chromaffinoma
• Liver failure
• Chronic kidney disease
• Raynaud's syndrome
• Myasthenia
• Thyrotoxicosis
• Depression
• Psoriasis
• Pregnancy
• Elderly age
• Young age

Which adverse effects may manifest when using the medication?

The most common side effects of Propranolol include: low blood pressure, congestive heart failure, low blood pressure, numbness in the extremities, depressions, insomnia, fatigue, nausea, depression, insomnia, diarrhea, constipation, sexual problems, low blood sugar levels, Peyronie's disease, hair loss.
