How does Proscar work and what pharmaceutical group does it belong to?

The preparation is a specific, competitive inhibitor of 5-alpha-reductase of II type. The preparation works by inhibiting the transformation of testosterone to dehydrotestosterone thus causing the size reduction of prostate gland and an increase in maximal speed of urine release, relieving the symptoms of prostate hyperplasia.

Which conditions are treated with Finasteride?

The preparation is indicated in treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia for the following reasons:

• To prevent urological complications and the necessity for surgery
• To decrease the size of the prostatic gland, thus improving the urine outflow and relief in symptom expression

What should a patient know before using Proscar?

The Finasteride should not be used in cases of:

• Hypersensitivity to any components of the preparation
• Children and women
• Obstructive uropathy
• Pregnancy
• Breastfeeding
• Finasteride is prescribed with caution in patients with extremely decreased level of urine release

Which adverse effects may manifest when using the medication?

The side effects of Proscar include:

• Urogenital system: testicle pain, impotence, decreased libido, ejaculation disorders, decreased quantity of ejaculate
• Endocrine system: enlargement and pain in the mammary gland
• Allergic reactions: skin rash, hives, angioneurotic swelling
