How does Celecoxib work and what pharmaceutical group does it belong to?

Celecoxib is belongs to a group of drugs called NSAID's or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. The drug works by specifically inhibiting of COX-2 - cyclooxygenase-2 thus blocking the inflammatory process. In therapeutic concentrations the preparation does not affect COX-1. The preparation exerts analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic effects.

Which conditions are treated with Celecoxib?

The preparation is indicated in symptomatic treatment of:

• Rheumatoid arthritis
• Osteoarthrosis
• Bechterew's disease
• Psoriatic arthritis

What should a patient know before using Celecoxib?

The Celecoxib should not be used in cases of:

• Hypersensitivity to any components of the preparations or to sulphonamides
• Pregnancy
• Breastfeeding

The preparation should be taken with caution in cases of:

• History of cardiovascular disease
• History of stomach ulcers
• Liver or kidney failure
• Epilepsy
• Asthma
• Bleeding or blood clotting disorders
• Nasal polyps

Which adverse effects may manifest when using the medication?

The side effects of Celecoxib include:

• Gastrointestinal tract: abdominal pain, diarrhea, dyspepsia, meteorism, nausea, constipation, gastritis, stomatitis, vomiting, liver disorders, stomach and duodenal ulcer, dysphagia, intestinal perforation, esophagitis, melena
• CNS: headache, dizziness, insomnia, blurred vision, paresthesia, anxiety, depression, ataxia
• Respiratory system: pharyngitis, rhinitis, sinusitis, upper respiratory tract infections, coughing, labored breathing
• Skin: rash, itching, hives, alopecia, photosensitivity
• Other: peripheral swelling, feet seizures, ear ringing, fatigability, urinary tract infections, change of taste
• Haemopoietic system: anemia, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia
• Cardiovascular system: hypertension, increased heart rate
