How does Voltaren work and what pharmaceutical group does it belong to?

Diclofenac is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. The drug works by inhibiting the synthesis of protaglandines which play the main role in development of inflammation symptoms. Diclofenac exerts analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic effect.

Which conditions are treated with Diclofenac?

The drug is used in treatment of different inflammatory disease:

• Joint inflammation
• Degenerative disease
• Moderate to sever pain syndrome in inflammatory disorders
• Post-traumatic inflammation

What should a patient know before using Voltaren?

The Diclofenac should not be used in cases of:

• Hypersensitivity
• Stomach or duodenal ulcer
• Haemopoietic disorders
• Aspirin induced asthma
• Age prior to 6 years
• Pregnancy

• Breastfeeding

The drug should be used with caution in:

• Liver and renal failure
• Cardiac failure
• Porphyria

Which adverse effects may manifest when using the medication?

The side effects of Voltaren include:

• Gastrointestinal tract: gastralgia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach spasm, dyspepsia, meteorism, anorexia
• CNS: headache, dizziness, fatigability
• Haemopoietic organs: thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, agranulocytosis, hemolytic anemia
• Allergic reactions

The drug is affected by the following:

• Li+ preparations
• Cardiac glycosides
• Anticoagulants
• Diabetes treatment
• Antibiotics
• Immunosuppressants
• Glucocorticosteroids
• Diuretics
• Other NSAID's

Tell your doctor about all the herbal preparations as well as prescription drugs that you are currently taking even if they are not on the list.
