How does Naprosyn work and what pharmaceutical group does it belong to?

Naprosyn belongs to a group of pharmaceuticals called NSAID's or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. The preparation exerts analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antipyretic effects which are induced by non-selective inhibition of COX-1 an COX-2 which regulate the synthesis of Pg.

Which conditions are treated with Naproxen?

The drug is prescribed in treatment of the following conditions:

• Inflammatory and degenerative disease of the locomotor system: rheumatoid, juvenile chronic, gout arthritis, Bechterew's disease(ankylosing spondylitis), osteoarthrosis.
• Pain syndrome: Myalgia, neuralgia, artralgia, radiculitis, headaches, toothaches, tendinitis, cancer, post-traumatic and post-surgical pain syndrome, accompanied by inflammation, algodismenorrhea, adnexitis, act of delivery.
• Infectious-inflammatory disease of the ENT with expressed pain syndrome(as subsidiary therapy)
• Fever syndrome in common cold and infectious disease.

What should a patient know before using Naprosyn?

The Naproxen should not be used in cases of:

• Hypersensitivity to any components of the preparation or to other NSAID's
• Erosive-ulcerous disease of the GI tract
• Aspirin triad
• Distorted haemopoietic function
• Renal or/and liver failure
• Pregnancy
• Breastfeeding
• Young age prior to 1 year

The preparation should be used with caution in:

• Chronic heart failure
• Young age prior to 16 years

Which adverse effects may manifest when using the medication?

The side effects of Naprosyn include:

• NSAID's induced gastropathy
• Nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort
• Skin rash, angioneurotic swelling, hives
• Headaches, somnolence, ear ringing, dizziness, weakness, decreased speed of psycho-motor reactions
• Gastrointestinal ulcers, bleeding and perforation of the GI tract
• Eosinophilia, thrombocytopenia, granulocytopenia, aplastic anemia, hemolytic anemia,
• Decreased hearing
• Liver or renal function disorders

Which groups of drugs or specific preparations may interact with Naproxen?

The drug is affected by the following:

• Diuretics
• Anticoagulants
• Anticonvulsants
• Diabetes treatment
• Immunosuppressors
• Beta blockers
• Li+ preparations
• Antacids
• Myelotoxic drugs

Tell your doctor about all the herbal preparations as well as prescription drugs that you are currently taking even if they are not on the list.

Naprosyn is supplied for individual use. Do not use it to treat other conditions not listed in the leaflet. Keep the product out of children reach. Do not reuse any disposable materials if supplied with the preparation.
