How does Dermovate work and what pharmaceutical group does it belong to?

Dermovate contains the active ingredient clobetasol propionate which is used only for local application in dermatology. Clobetasol propionate exerts non-specific anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic action due to vasoconstriction and decreased production of collagen in the skin. Clobetasol helps relieve edema, eliminate hyperemia and itching.

Which conditions are treated with Dermovate?

Dermovate is used to treat psoriasis (except for plaque psoriasis), refractory eczema, lichen acuminatus (lichen ruber planus), discoid lupus erythematosus.

What should a patient know before using Dermovate?

The Dermovate should not be used in cases of:

  • Hypersensitivity to any of the medication ingredients
  • Perianal and genital itching
  • Acne rosacea
  • Acne vulgaris
  • Perioral dermatitis
  • Viral skin infections
  • Primary fungal or bacterial skin damages
  • Dermatitis in children under 1 year of age

Which adverse effects may manifest when using the medication?

Long-term treatment with Dermovate may result in development of symptoms associated with suppression of adrenal and pituitary gland. Most often this occurs in young children by using air-tight dressings

Prolonged and intensive use of this drug may provoke superficial vasodilation, atrophic skin changes, thinning, increased hair growth, changes in pigmentation, aggravation of common symptoms of the disease especially when using air-tight dressings. In rare cases Dermovate may provoke the development of pustular forms of the disease.

Local reactions: local redness, burning, itching, allergic dermatitis

Which groups of drugs or specific preparations may interact with Dermovate?

The drug is affected by the following:

  • Corticosteroids
  • Topical anti-fungal drugs
  • Topical antibiotics
  • Local H1-histamine receptor blockers

Tell your doctor about all the herbal preparations as well as prescription drugs that you are currently taking even if they are not on the list.

Important information for the patient: Dermovate is supplied for individual use. Do not use it to treat other conditions not listed in the leaflet. Keep the product out of children reach. Do not reuse any disposable materials if supplied with the preparation.
