How does Zelnorm work and what pharmaceutical group does it belong to?

Tegaserod is a drug which is used to regulate the motor function of the gastrointestinal tract. The drug works by stimulating the serotonin receptors in the GI tract and causing a release of a wide variety of mediators. In patients with irritable bowel syndrome accompanied by constipation the drug promotes peristalsis in the small and large intestines. Promotes normalization of the fecal masses consistency and decreases the expression of disease symptoms.

Which conditions are treated with Tegaserod?

The drug is indicated in treatment of:

• Irritable bowel syndrome
• Chronic idiopathic constipation

The Tegaserod should not be used in cases of:

• Severe liver failure
• Young age
• Pregnancy
• Breastfeeding
• Hypersensitivity to the components of the preparation
• Ischemic colitis
• Severe diarrhea

The drug should be used with caution in elderly patients and patients with renal failure. Due to risk of severe side-effects the drug is currently discontinued in USA and Canada.

Which adverse effects may manifest when using the medication?

The side effects of Zelnorm include:

• Diarrhea
• Abdominal pain
• Nausea
• Cramps
• Dizziness
• Headache
• Back pain
• Flu-like symptoms
• Increased possibility of cardiovascular disease: angina, stroke and etc.

It is not necessary that the side effects will manifest in an individual but the possibility still exist. For more information please consult your health care provider.
