How does Guttalax work and what pharmaceutical group does it belong to?

Guttalax is laxative preparation. It works by reducing the absorption of electrolytes and water, increasing intestinal peristalsis. Under the action of intestinal microorganisms sodium picosulfate is converted into its active form and irritate the receptors of bowel's wall, accelerating the movement of intestinal content. Guttalax exerts laxative action in 10-12 hours after application.

Which conditions are treated with Guttalax?

• Atonic constipation
• Stool regulation (hemorrhoids, proctitis, anal fissures)
• Preparation for surgical interventions, instrumental and X-rays examinations

What should a patient know before using Guttalax?

The Guttalax should not be used in cases of:

• Intestinal obstruction
• Constricted hernia
• Acute inflammatory diseases of the abdominal cavity
• Stomach pain of unknown origin
• Bleedings from gastrointestinal tract
• Spastic constipation
• Severe dehydration
• Metrorrhagia
• Cystitis
• Pregnancy (especially 1 tremester)
• Children under 4 years of age
• Hypersensitivity to any of the medication ingredients

Which adverse effects may manifest when using the medication?

The side effects of Guttalax include: diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain. In rare cases Guttalax may cause: water depletion, seizures, disorders of water-electrolyte balance, decreased blood pressure.

It is not necessary that the side effects will manifest in an individual but the possibility still exist. For more information please consult your health care provider.

Which groups of drugs or specific preparations may interact with Guttalax?

• Diuretics
• Corticosteroids
• Other laxative stimulants
• Antibiotic with a broad-spectrum of action

Tell your doctor about all the herbal preparations as well as prescription drugs that you are currently taking even if they are not on the list.

Important information for the patient: Guttalax is supplied for individual use. Do not use it to treat other conditions not listed in the leaflet. Keep the product out of children reach. Do not reuse any disposable materials if supplied with the preparation.
