How does Omeprazole work and what pharmaceutical group does it belong to?

Omeprazole acts specifically by inhibiting H-/K-AT phase. The drug does not affect acetylcholine and histamine receptors. Omeprazole is not stable in acid environment. The capsule decomposes fast in the stomach and releases microgranules covered by a specific layer. After that it goes to duodenum. This provides a better and gradual absorption of the drug. After absorption, Omeprazole metabolizes almost completely in the liver and is excreted from the organism with urine.

Which conditions are treated with Omeprazole?

The drug is administered when the following:

• Duodenal ulcer
• Benign gastric ulcer
• Gastroesophageal reflux accompanied by a severe erosive esophagitis
• Zollinger-Ellison syndrome

What should a patient know before using Omeprazole?

The medicine should not be used in cases of:

• Hypersensitivity to drug's components
• Pregnancy, lactation period

Which adverse effects may manifest when using the medication?

The side effects of Omeprazole include:

• Diarrhea
• Headache
• Skin rash
• Arthralgia, myalgia, leukopenia
• Liver dysfunction

The drug is affected by the following:

• Anxiolytics
• Indirect anticoagulants
• Anticonvulsants
