How does Prevacid work and what pharmaceutical group does it belong to?

Prevacid is an anti-ulcer drug which is called proton pump inhibitor. Proton pump is located in the parietal cells of the stomach and is responsible for the production of acid in the stomach. By inhibiting this proton pump Prevacid decreases the amount acid which is produced and released in the stomach. Prevacid does not act on the gastrointestinal movement. Prevacid helps the symptoms of heartburn and GERD symptoms go away, allows damage to the esophagus, stomach or intestines to heal.

Which conditions are treated with Prevacid?

Prevacid is used to treat the following conditions: erosive gastritis, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, gastrointestinal stress ulcers,gastric and duodenal ulcer,reflux esophagitis; non-ulcer dyspepsia, Helicobacter pylori eradication.

What should a patient know before using Prevacid?

The drug should not be used in:

• Hypersensitivity to the components of the drug
• Pregnancy (1 trimesters)
• Breastfeeding(lactation period)
• The medication should be used with caution in children and adolescents under 18 years of age and elderly age
• Endoscopic control is necessary before and after the treatment to avoid malignant tumors because the treatment can mask the disease and postpone the right diagnosis.

Which adverse effects may manifest when using the medication?

The side effects of Prevacid include:

• Diarrhea, nausea, weakness, skin rash, itch, dizziness, anxiety, bloating, cough, painful strain of the breast, hyperthermia, depression and vision disorder, headache.

It is not necessary that the side effects will manifest in an individual but the possibility still exist. For more information please consult your health care provider.

Which groups of drugs or specific preparations may interact with Prevacid?

The drug is affected by the following:

• Iron salts
• Anti-inflamatory agents
• NSAID
• Antacids
• Antibiotics
• Antiulcers

Tell your doctor about all the herbal preparations as well as prescription drugs that you are currently taking even if they are not on the list.

Prevacid is supplied for individual use. Do not use it to treat other conditions not listed in the leaflet. Keep the product out of children reach. Do not reuse any disposable materials if supplied with the preparation.
