How does Prevacid work and what pharmaceutical group does it belong to?
Prevacid is an anti-ulcer drug which is called proton pump inhibitor. Proton pump is located in the parietal cells of the stomach and is responsible for the production of acid in the stomach. By inhibiting this proton pump Prevacid decreases the amount acid which is produced and released in the stomach. Prevacid does not act on the gastrointestinal movement. Prevacid helps the symptoms of heartburn and GERD symptoms go away, allows damage to the esophagus, stomach or intestines to heal.

Prevacid is used to treat the following conditions: erosive gastritis, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, gastrointestinal stress ulcers,gastric and duodenal ulcer,reflux esophagitis; non-ulcer dyspepsia, Helicobacter pylori eradication.
