How does Protonix work and what pharmaceutical group does it belong to?

Protonix belongs to the class of medications called proton pump inhibitors. It works by inhibiting a proton pump in the parietal cells of the stomach. Proton pump is responsible for the production of hydrochloric acid. By inhibiting this proton pump Protonix lowers the amount of hydrochloric acid in the stomach and decreases hyperacidity. Inhibitory effect of hydrochloric acid products is dose-related. Pantoprazole does not act on the gastrointestinal movement. Secretory activity is normalized within 3-4 days after cessation the therapy.

Which conditions are treated with Protonix?

Protonix is used for the treatment of the following conditions:

• Gastric and duodenal ulcer
• Erosive gastritis
• Reflux esophagitis
• Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
• Gastrointestinal stress ulcers

What should a patient know before using Protonix?

Do not use the drug if you have hypersensitivity to any components of the preparation dyspepsia of neurotic genesispregnancy Protonix should be taken with caution in breastfeeding, hepatic failure.Protonix may suppress the absorption of vitamin B12. Talk with your doctor if you have any concerns.

Which adverse effects may manifest when using the medication?

The side effects of Protonix include:

• Headache, diarrhea, nausea, bloating, painful strain of the breast, weakness, skin rash, itching, dizziness, hyperthermia, depression and vision disorder.

It is not necessary that the side effects will manifest in an individual but the possibility still exist. For more information please consult your health care provider.

Which groups of drugs or specific preparations may interact with Protonix?

The drug is affected by the following:

• NSAID's
• Iron salts
• Antibiotics

Tell your doctor about all the herbal preparations as well as prescription drugs that you are currently taking even if they are not on the list.

Protonix is supplied for individual use. Do not use it to treat other conditions not listed in the leaflet. Keep the product out of children reach. Do not reuse any disposable materials if supplied with the preparation.
