How does Xenical work and what pharmaceutical group does it belong to?

Xenical is an inhibitor of stomach-intestinal lypase. Their mechanism of action is connected with formation of covalent bond with an active section of gastric-intestinal lypase thus the enzyme cannot break up the lipids which are received with food. These lipids due to their large size cannot be absorbed into the intestinal wall thus are eliminated with fecal masses. The patient receives less calories and starts to lose weight. The effects of the preparation can be monitored within 24-48 hours after the beginning of administration.

Which conditions are treated with Orlistat?

The preparation is used to treat:

• Obesity
• Excess weight
• The drug is used for both indications in combination with ad hypocaloric diet.

What should a patient know before using Xenical?

The Orlistat should not be used in cases of:

• Syndrome of muscle malabsorption
• Hypersensitivity to the components of the preparation
• Pregnancy and lactation period
• Young age

Patients with the following disorders have to exert caution when using Xenical:

• Liver or renal failure
• Diabetes

Which adverse effects may manifest when using the medication?

The side effects of Xenical include:

• Gastrointestinal tract: Oleous excrements, increased gas formation, Increased defecation, fatty stool, abdominal pain, liquid stool
• Allergic reactions

The drug is affected by the following:

• Immunosuppressants
• Fat soluble vitamins
• Antiarrhythmic preparations
