How does Fosamax work and what pharmaceutical group does it belong to?

Fosamax is a preparation which affects the metabolism of the bone tissue. The preparation effectively inhibits bone resorption which is caused by osteoclasts.

Which conditions are treated with Fosamax?

The preparation is used in treatment of:

• Osteoporosis in women during or after menopause period to prevent fractures including spinal and thigh
• Paget's disease
• Malignant hypercalcemia

What should a patient know before using Alendronate?

The Fosamax should not be used in cases of:

• Gastrointestinal blockage
• Inability to stand or sit for more then 30 minutes
• Hypersensitivity to any components of the preparations
• Severe liver failure
• Hypocalcemia
• Pregnancy
• Breastfeeding period
• Young age

Which adverse effects may manifest when using the medication?

The side effects of Alendronate include:

• Bone pain
• Muscle pain
• Joint pain
• Abdominal pain
• Dyspepsia
• Nausea
• Bloating
• Constipation
• Meteorism
• Muscle contractions
• Gastritis
• Stomach ulcer
• Allergic reaction

The drug is affected by the following:

• Calcium preparations
• Antacids
• NSAID's

Alendronate is supplied for individual use. Do not use it to treat other conditions not listed in the leaflet. Keep the product out of children reach. Do not reuse any disposable materials if supplied with the preparation.
